Utility Locator & Ferrous Metal Detector
The VM-585 combines a utility locator and a ferrous metal detector in one tool — ideal for tracing short runs such as service drops and for finding buried ferrous objects like valve-box covers and tanks. A 50/60 Hz passive power mode plus three active frequencies (512/640 Hz, 8.19 kHz and 83.1 kHz) detect live power cables and trace short distances. The one-watt transmitter applies a locate signal by direct connection or induction, and optional clamps induce signal onto a line.
In metal-detect mode, advanced filtering rejects materials like bottle caps and aluminum cans and zeros in on ferrous targets only. Manual gain control lets it work close to large metal objects — cars, chain-link fences — while still finding targets underground, and it reads through asphalt, concrete, grass or snow.
